Local resident victimized by phone scammers, Prince Rupert RCMP issue public warning of computer service scam

By now there's a good chance you have had this phone call arrive, but if not, take note that the phone lines into Prince Rupert are particularly busy these days.

That as a "helpful associate" of what he calls an "affiliate of Microsoft" makes contact with Rupertites offering to help you "clean up your computer".

A process, which initially is suggested will be free, but as the "computer review" moves ahead suddenly requires the payment of 159 dollars to repair problems that have been "discovered."

By now you have probably surmised that this is a scam, and the RCMP have confirmed your suspicions with a press release that stressed a key warning to the community.

"The Prince Rupert RCMP wants to warn the community of this suspected phone scam to prevent any further victimization.... One of the best precautions one can take is to never give out personal information over the phone, Internet, or to people you don’t know or trust. Generally these companies do not contact you, you contact them."--- Constable Matt Ericson, spokesperson for the Prince Rupert RCMP

At least, one unfortunate Rupertite has reportedly fallen victim to the scammers, providing payment and access to their computer by way of remote access.

You can review the RCMP press release, along with some helpful reminders on proper personal security procedures here.
