Prince George receptive to Don Krusel's trade message

Last week, we outlined some of the talking points that Prince Rupert Port Authority President and CEO Don Krusel was taking to Prince George with him for a luncheon address on Northern BC economic activity through the Port of Prince Rupert.

With the review complete, it would seem that the message was well received in Northern British Columbia's largest city, with more than a few of the themes reviewed through media outlets in the city over the last few days.

The overall theme of his presentation was an overview of how trade connects not only Prince Rupert, but all communities of Northern BC with the growing markets of Asia and beyond.

Krusel pointed to a company close to home for Prince George residents, as to how the Port impacts on industry in their region. Highlighting how Prince George based Pinnacle Pellet has not only begun shipments overseas through port facilities in Prince Rupert, but also created employment in Terrace through a partnership with a First Nation band to develop a pellet manufacturing plant in that city.

He also pointed towards the Prince George rail yards, where a container stuffing facility has provided jobs for workers in that city, sending forest resources to export markets as well as creating railway jobs across the entire Northern route of the Canadian National line.

Among some of the other topics on the day that caught the attention of Prince George, was the access to Asian markets that the Port of Prince Rupert offers, something that Prince George industry both large and small is taking advantage of.

Over the last few years, trade delegations have made frequent trips from the Interior to Asian markets to try and position Prince George in the trade cycle, using the Port of Prince Rupert as the export point for resources and goods from the Central Interior.

Another venture to Asia is planned by the Prince George Chamber of Commerce for the fall, seeking to find ways to make use of the Port's footprint in the region and how it can create more economic growth in the Central Interior.

Some of the reviews of Mr. Krusel's conversation on trade can be found below.
