A new video presentation from the BC Maritime Employers Association is providing a glimpse into an industry that is changing rapidly, as the once male dominated occupations of the longshore trade are finding more and more women signing on.
Prince Rupert's Fairview Container Terminals and associated long shoring jobs in the region are part of those changes reviewed in the video.
Glen Edwards President of Prince Rupert's ILWU local 505 outlined how the number of women working the waterfront in the city have grown from two, to over thirty at last count since the most recent recruitment drive for positions.
Included in those totals are two of Mr. Edwards own daughters, one of whom after completing training, may soon be one of the first female dock gantry crane operators in Prince Rupert.
The six minute presentation provides a good overview of some of the occupations available on the waterfront and the working atmosphere these days, especially as the employment dynamic changes for British Columbia's longshore occupations.
