Nominations set to open for Municipal/Regional District elections in November




While the Prince Rupert Mayoralty race seems to have already sprinted from the start line, for the remainder of the North Coast's election cycle, the process of seeking our vote is only just now starting to ramp up.

The first sign of the upcoming November elections has been the flurry of advertising outlining the process ahead for nominations for office, with the City of Prince Rupert, District of Port Edward and Skeena Queen Charlotte Regional District all adding to the revenue stream of the weekly newspaper in recent days.

Prince Rupert

Nomination forms can be submitted for this fall's election starting on September 30th until October 10 during regular hours of Operation at City Hall.

There are six positions to be elected to Prince Rupert Council, to go along with the election of Mayor at the November vote.  Six members will also be elected as trustees to the School District 52 board.

The Qualifications for office require potential candidates to meet the following:

Canadian Citizen

18 years of age or older as of the general voting day of November 15, 2014

Resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day nomination papers are filed

A person who has been granted freedom of the municipality, it that person is a Canadian citizen and not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from being nominated for, being elected to or holding office, or be otherwise disqualified by law.

Port Edward

Nomination forms can be submitted for this fall's election starting on September 30th until October 10 during regular hours of Operation at the District of Port Edward offices.

There are four positions to be elected to Port Edward Council, to go along with the election of Mayor at the November vote.  One members will also be elected as rural trustee to the School District 52 board. (Nomination forms for the School District election can also be obtained at the School District office at 634- 6th Avenue East in Prince Rupert)

The Qualifications for office require potential candidates to meet the following:

18 years of age or older as of the general voting day of November 15, 2014

Regional District

Nominations for Areas A, C, D , E and those for School trustee (rural includes District of Port Edward) and School District 52 will be received by the SQCRD starting on September 30th until October 10th from 9 am until 4 PM during regular days of operation at the SQCRD office.

Qualifications for office are universal across the province and are the same as those above for Prince Rupert.
