Northern Safe Sport Tour heads for Prince Rupert September 12 and 13

Local athletes and parents of the same will want to make note of three workshops coming to Prince Rupert later this weekend.

As part of the Northern Safe Sport Tour, members of SportMedBC will be providing information and instruction on a number of sports health related topics.

Two of the sessions take place on Friday, with a Concussion Management Workshop set to take place from 6:30 to 7:30 PM. The session which is led by an experienced Athletic Therapist will focus on the latest medical and scientific information about brain injury, sport risk factors, prevention techniques and concussion management guidelines.

The second of the Friday night sessions runs from 8 to 9:30 PM is called a SportSmart Workshop, the ninety minute program will focus on such things as how to make sure that players are properly prepared for activities.

As well participants will learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of serious injuries, including concussion, as well as how to administer basic on-site sports first aid. It also provides instruction for participants on where to turn in the event of an injury to their children.

The cost for each of the Friday night's sessions is fifteen dollars per session.

Saturday's program is an eight hour session on the theme of Athletic Taping.  Taking place from 9 Am to 5 PM,  the sessions  offer up a comprehensive review which covers many of the taping techniques used in a sport setting.

Participants will learn through a combination of lectures and practical sessions.  Upon completion of the Saturday session a certificate of completion will be issued.  Participation for the Saturday program is limited to fifteen participants.

The cost of the Athletic Taping program is 130 dollars.

All of the weekend programs take place at the Prince Rupert Recreation Centre.

The two days of programs are sponsored by Northern Health, WINBC, SportMedBC, Canadian Sport for Life, Play Safe, The Dr. Tom Pashby Sports Safety Fund and Pacific Sport Northern BC.

The programs move on to Terrace and Smithers following the two days in Prince Rupert.
