The City introduces a new Recreation Director for Prince Rupert

There is a new name to be put on the door at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre complex this September, as the City of Prince Rupert announced the hiring of a new Recreation Director last month.

Ms. Willa Thorpe will provide the new direction for recreation services in the community, taking on the title of Director of Recreation and Community Services.

She arrives in Prince Rupert after holding a number of positions in Recreation Management in Vancouver, Chilliwack and Smithers.

The hiring of Ms. Thorpe who starts her job at the Civic Centre on September 3rd, brings to an end the search for a replacement for the former Recreation Co-ordintaor Rudy Kelly, who left the employ of the city earlier this year.

Mr. Kelly's departure came along at the same time as the City of Prince Rupert launched a full scale revision to its Recreation Department. With a number of changes taking place including the hiring of a Recreation Specialist, Brent Meunier and the subsequent formation of a Recreation Commission.

The most recent search for a full time Director was first outlined on the blog back in June, with the posting of the job opportunity to the city's information portal.

Not mentioned in the Welcome Aboard news release of August, is any further information regarding Mr. Meunier's term of employment as Recreation Consultant for the city (he is still listed on the City's website as the Recreation Consultant) and whether his original term of employment which commenced in January of 2014 has been extended.

As well, if Mr. Meunier continues to hold his position on the civic payroll, Council may wish to share some clarification as to how his duties may now change with the hiring of Ms. Thorpe as the City's new Director of Recreation.
