Council to consider commemorating Dr. Frank Pyde with Arena name change

An initiative brought to the city from Prince Rupert Minor Hockey may provide an opportunity for residents of the city to offer up their best condolences at the passing of a long time Prince Rupert resident and strong advocate for hockey both at the minor level and with the Senior Men's Ramapge squad.

The passing of Dr. Frank Pyde in mid August has resonated with many in the community, with his long attachment to sports in the city, particularly with hockey giving the Prince Rupert Minor Hockey Association the chance to suggest that the city's arena at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre be renamed in honour of Dr. Pyde.

At the August 22nd Council session, Councillor Wade Niesh provided a tribute to the work of Dr. Pyde in the community, particularly that of his involvement with both minor hockey and his instrumental role in bringing the Prince Rupert Rampage Senior Men's Hockey club into being.

Mayor Brain, who also offered up a few thoughts on the passing of Doctor Pyde, advised Council of the PRMHA initiative that had been outlined to the city by the Rosa Miller from the local minor hockey body.

The Mayor provided motion of intent to bring the topic up for consideration at the next City Council session in September.
