In a media release from Friday, the City of Prince Rupert outlined it's plan, with Willa Thorpe the Director of Recreation and Community Services providing some background on what the program is all about.
“We believe that all Rupertites should have the opportunity to participate in sport, art and cultural activities in our Recreation Complex. ... The Recreation Access Program was designed to ensure that all residents have the opportunity to get active and involved, no matter their financial circumstance.”
To build on the success of the program, the city is also looking to local organizations, businesses and individuals to lend some support by way of contributions, which will be used expand on the impact and ability to increase the resources of the program to reach more residents.

The City's Recreation Access program offers individuals and families in financial need with discounts on course registrations and free admission to recreation complex facilities. Registration for the program is confidential and based solely on financial need.
The city notes that each year the program provides assistance to over one hundred residents.
