The venue was a fitting place for a proclamation on Monday evening, as the members of Prince Rupert City Council, a group that are never short of words, paid tribute to the art of crafting a speech.

As part of their salute to the development of proper speaking skills, City Council proclaimed the month of February as Toastmaster's Month in Prince Rupert.

The proclamation came part of the Monday Council session, one of a number of requests from local groups that the Council attended to during the course of the evening.

The request to Council for the declaration came from the city's Toastmaster's group, which has rebuilt the local chapter after a period of inactivity.

The local group relaunched the program in 2015 and have expanded their work in the community to include an involvement with the Chamber of Commerce's Rising Stars mentorship program

In a media release celebrating the Proclamation, Club president Michal Sluka offered up a look at how the local Toastmasters group help to build confidence when it comes to public speaking.

"We are proud and enthusiastic about the influence of Toastmasters in Prince Rupert ... Successful people recognize that leadership and public speaking skills grow when they’re being used. Whether you’re a seasoned leader or a nervous First-time presenter, Toastmasters is the perfect place to improve your technique and acquire valuable experience."

The Prince Rupert chapter has seen over 100 participants take part in their activities over the course of the last two years, increasing their confidence in public speaking and developing leadership skills in the community.

The Prince Rupert club meets every Tuesday evening at 7:30 at Northwest Community College.

You can learn more about the program from the Prince Rupert Toastmasters website.
