A Syrian Sampler set for late July

An opportunity for residents of the North Coast to learn more about our newest arrivals comes up later this month, as Prince Rupert's Syrian Refugee support group and Much Gusto catering combine their forces to present the first Syrian Cooking Class with Fatima Atyah.

Ms. Atyah and her family relocated to Prince Rupert last year and have quickly immersed themselves in the community, and as they become more comfortable in their new surroundings they have become engaged with a number of community initiatives.

The cooking class is a project that will not only showcase the culinary options from the Middle East but offer up a glimpse into Syrian culture as well.

Taking place on July 26th from 6 to 8 PM in the upstairs area of the Prince Rupert Curling Club, the class will explore traditional Syrian dishes, with the focus for the first event on three dishes.

Tabbouleh -- a vegetarian dish made of tomatoes, finely chopped parsley, mint, bulgur, and onion, all seasoned with olive oil, lemon juice and salt.

Fatteh -- A popular dish of toasted pita, chickpeas and tahini yogurt sauce

Hummus -- A traditional dip made with chick peas, tahini, lemon juice olive oil and salt

Class fees are fifty dollars per person and pre-registration is required.

Registration can take place through the Much Gusto Cart located outside of the Wheelhouse Brewing Company in Cow Bay or through email, contact muchogusto@gmail.com for more details.

The July class may be just the first of what organizers hope may be a wider program, with plans in mind to expand the cooking classes opportunities in the fall.
