City Council Preview: Monday, September 11, 2017

With busy travel plans on the horizon, Prince Rupert City Council puts the wrap on their reduced summer schedule tonight, as they meet for their only Council session for September.

After tonight's lone opportunity for public civic governance, Council members will make the return to twice a month sessions next month as we flip the calendar pages over into October.

A fairly light schedule will greet the Council members as they gather this evening, with a pair of variance issues leading off the agenda, along with a pair of reports from the City's Financial Officer.

One of those reports from CFO Corinne Bomben will seek authorization to borrow $890,000 for the city's newly arrived Custom pumper truck for the Prince Rupert Fire/Rescue Department.

Council will also review and then look to move forward with the city's Permissive Property Tax exemptions for 2018-19, the report will offer up an amendment from previous years.

The amendments relate to property owned by the Roman Catholic Annunciation School and items related to the Prince Rupert Golf Society.

In addition, Council will look to add a property to the list, that property which has been leased by the City of Prince Rupert to the Kaien Island Trail Enhancement Society.

Council has a timeline of six weeks to adopt those amendments and have them in place by October 31st.

The full list of properties under consideration can be found as part of Corinne Bomben's Report to council, the CFO's notes are available starting on Page 48 of the agenda for tonight's session.

The September 11th session had also been scheduled as a Committee of the Whole night, however a notice to the public posted last week advised that the COW portion of the night had been cancelled.

With that cancellation so to was the forum where residents would have had an opportunity raise concerns, or to ask questions of Council if they had desired.

Council members will also head behind closed doors once again, as they host a Closed Session on the night, the advisory to the City website noting the following criteria for the discussion outside of the public view:

90.1  (e) the acquisition, disposition or expropriation of land or improvements, if the council considers that disclosure could reasonably be expected to harm the interests of the municipality.

The Regular Council Session starts with the adoption of agendas and minutes.

(See Agenda here)
