Blog Watching: Week ending January 14, 2018


Our look at  the annual visit from the flu bug made for the most read item of the week as we took note of some of the impact of the bug and how there is still time to get a flu shot to help reduce your chances of suffering from it.

Municipal politics also made for a few threads on the week, with our notes on the rather light schedule of Public Sessions that Prince Rupert city Council has decided to work with this year among one of our most read items.

Readers also found much interest in our look at an upcoming public information session for a supportive housing facility on 11th Avenue East.

If a new years resolution included a more dedicated exercise plans, NWCC has something to help meet your goals if your a student, staff or faculty member of the Prince Rupert campus.

And the city's business sector will soon see another store closure, with the local Acklands-Grainger location at the start of its store closing process as the Illinois based parent company continues to reduce its storefront footprint across Canada.

The top story of the last seven days however puts the focus on the flu, which made the holiday period a bit of a challenge for some and continues to circulate around the region.

Northern Health continues to stress availability of flu shot as flu season begins to take hold across British Columbia  -- The 2017-18 flu season has arrived on the North Coast with a number of reports of area residents suffering the effects of a pretty nasty bug, though to this point Northern Health hasn't advised as to any numbers or large concerns, they do however continue to suggest that people take advantage of the flu shot opportunities in the region. (posted January 12,  2018)

City's Council members return to work Monday, taking to reduced Public Session schedule for 2018 -- Prince Rupert's City Council hosts the first of a rather short year of Public Council sessions on Monday, which includes a schedule that features No public sessions in September and October (posted January  12, 2018)

Supportive Housing proponent schedules information meeting for January 18th  -- Residents of the 11th Avenue East area that is the proposed location for a supportive housing facility will have their first opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the project at a public information session at the Crest Hotel in mid January   (posted January  2018)

NWCC Nordic walkers group looking for new members -- The Prince Rupert Campus of NWCC hosts a noon hour walking group for students, staff and faculty through to April. (posted January  10, 2018)

Prince Rupert's Acklands-Grainger location begins process of shutting down -- The city's business sector suffers another setback and Prince Rupert's workforce will have one less option when it comes to purchasing industrial supplies, as the city's Acklands-Grainger location prepares to close its operations.
